Met nummers als 'Fire and Rain', 'Country Road', 'Something in the Way She Moves', 'Mexico', 'Shower the People', 'Your Smiling Face', 'Carolina In My Mind', 'Sweet Baby James', 'Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight', 'You Can Close Your Eyes', 'Walking Man', 'Never Die Young', 'Shed a Little Light', 'Copperline' en 'Caroline I See You' schreef Taylor een schatkist aan parels bijeen. Taylor drukte een onuitwisbare stempel op 'zijn publiek’, de babyboomers maar ook op de vele singer-songwriters die na hem kwamen. In 1971 stond hij op de cover van Time magazine, wat luidde als de voorbode van de singer-songwriter eeuw.

Gezegend met een warme baritonstem en uniek gitaarspel, bezingt hij al zes decennia lang de pijn (en de lichtheid) van het zijn. James Taylor was de eerste niet-Brit die tekende bij Apple Records, het platenlabel van The Beatles. Sinds zijn tweede plaat Sweet Baby James tot aan zijn meest recente studioplaten krijgt hij de artistieke en commerciële erkenning die hij verdient.

Taylor heeft in totaal meer dan 100 miljoen albums verkocht, die goud, platinum en multi-platinum verdienden sinds zijn debuutalbum in 1968. Op zijn live-albums Live (1993), One Man Band (2007) en Live at The Troubadour (2010, samen met Carole King) kan je horen met hoeveel passie hij zijn (en andermans) nummers brengt. Zijn album Before This World (2015) behaalde een nummer één positie in de Billboard Charts. In februari 2020 bracht hij zijn 19de en nieuwste album American Standard uit, wat hem de eerste artiest maakt die 6 decennia op rij de top tien behaalt in de Amerikaanse Billboard Albums Chart.
