About
Chicago metal titans with some of the mightiest melodies in the game
Colliding bone-crushing riffs with soaring melodies and one of the most instantly recognisable voices in modern metal, Disturbed have spent over two decades at the forefront of heavy music.
Led by commanding frontman David Draiman, whose guttural growls and signature baritone bellows have become spine-tingling markers of the band’s unique sound, the Chicago quartet have made it their mission to redefine what it means to make heavy music. Crafting a legacy built on a foundation of both aggression and vulnerability, their melodic take on the genre has seen them swerve clear of all trends. Their sound flirting with nu-metal, groove-metal, hard rock and industrial influences whilst never fully committing to one lane, a refusal to settle has seen Disturbed cement themselves as one of the most influential forces in the game.
With Draiman joining their ranks in 1996 – following a brief stint going by the name of Brawl – Disturbed exploded onto the radar of rock fans everywhere with 2000’s The Sickness. A debut album of epic proportions, tracks such as ‘Stupify’ and ‘Down With The Sickness’ became instant rock radio classics, the latter featuring Draiman’s now iconic, primal "Ooh-wah-ah-ah-ah" vocal. Riding the growing nu-metal wave yet setting themselves firmly aside from their peers with chugging riffs and arena-ready choruses, they swiftly made a name for themselves with their penchant for pushing boundaries, joining Marilyn Manson for shows throughout Europe and taking to stages across the US as part of Ozzfest 2000.
Refining their live show and evolving their sound, 2002’s Believe retained all the grit and guts of their debut whilst further embracing their melodic tendencies. Showcasing the band’s razor-sharp songwriting and their ability to craft songs bursting with power and passion, it introduced much more depth to the four-piece – leaning into overt religious and spiritual themes. From the reflectively moody ‘Remember’ and the darkly anthemic ‘Prayer’ – an emotional cut partly inspired by the events of the September 11 attacks – to sombre, acoustic closer ‘Darkness’, the bold sophomore effort outlined Draiman and co.’s intent to turn their multi-platinum success into something more meaningful.
A band fuelled by their determination to share their message with the masses, 2005’s Ten Thousand Fists came as a declaration of strength, boasting fan-favourite single ‘Stricken’ and a thunderous cover of Genesis’ ‘Land of Confusion’. Surging with aggression, its title track became a rallying cry for fans, sparking a unified raising of fists that has since become an integral part of the band’s live show
Their arena-filling power growing with the darkly textured, hard-hitting one-two punch of Indestructible (2008) and Asylum (2010), a five-year hiatus was broken with the release of 2015’s Immortalized. Home to a haunting, cinematic cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘The Sound of Silence’, it offered up the purest form of their sound to date. Stripped of distortion and guided by raw vulnerability, the success of the cover introduced Disturbed to an entirely new audience, setting the stage for another chapter of evolution.
A story of growth that has been continued with the aptly titled Evolution (2018) and 2022’s Divisive, as they approach their 30-year anniversary Disturbed’s fire burns fiercer than ever. Delving into the darkest depths of human existence, shining a light on the tragedies whilst offering up glimmers of hope, their fist-pumping live shows have become a vital source of catharsis for many within the metal community. Proof of the power music holds through pain and struggle – in 2025 they’re ready to flex their muscles on UK shores once more.
