The timeless story touches both young and old. It unfolds on the most special evening of the year, the one on which the Jellicle cats celebrate their big ball. One of them will be chosen by the wise Old Deterenomy to be born again and to begin a new cat life. It just so happens thatGrizabella, the glamour cat that has been travelling the world for many years returns home that very night. She craves contact with her family, but much to her sadness they do not want to have anything to do with her. The party is cruelly interrupted when Old Deuteronomy is kidnapped by the villain Macavity. The cats however stand united and free their leader. Against all odds the wise, old cat selects Grizabella to be reborn…
The opening night of CATS took place in West End, London in May 1985. It turned out to be the beginning of a triumph that now, exactly 35 years later, still has not come to an end. By now over 55 million people in more than 350 cities in 20 countries have enjoyed the show.
CATS was not only the longest running show in the West End, but also the musical that was the most performed on Broadway and the longest touring show in the history of the United States. In 1983 The Broadway production won 7 Tony Awards, the ‘Oscar’ for musicals, among them that for Best Musical. The famous hit song Memory has been covered by over 170 artists, from Barbra Streisand till Barry Manilow. In May 2016 a brand new touring show started a very special Jubilee Tour that returns to cities that were successfully visited in the past, Antwerp being one of them.
The show will be performed in English and subtitled in French and Dutch. The Belgian opening night will be on the 29th of March 2017 in the beautifully rebuilt Queen Elisabeth Theatre. The show entertains visitors of all ages and cultures. CATS consists of a cast and crew of 56 artists and technicians that guarantee an explosion of energy on stage.
